Having worked for several prominent retail organizations I have seen the impact of both positive and negative cultures on the workforce, the customers and, of course, the success of the business. I want to tell you about the incredible culture created by a CEO, and a gentleman, I ll call Sam.
For three years, I had the opportunity to work for the company that this man headed up before he decided to sell his successful enterprise to a large, old school retailer. We were all very happy for him. This sale was going to mean a lot more time for he and his wife to travel and generally enjoy life after a lot of years of hard work and dedication to their business. We were saddened to be losing such a great leader but we knew he deserved the rest and we wished him well.
Those three years were perhaps the most rewarding and educational years of my entire career, one that spans over twenty years. The company was managed in such a way that you had no choice but to feel like an important part of it. No employee was ever treated like a number, unworthy of receiving up to date communication on what was happening within the company. The executive were always aware of the impact their actions would have on store personnel and customers. In this company everyone understood where, and by whom, sales were made and every effort was made to include input from the field whenever important decisions were being made that would affect employees or customers.
The man I speak of did not always have a successful company on his hands. At one time, as I understand, the company had been on the brink of failure. He, and his loyal employees managed to save it. It was quite a feat, requiring dedication, a new direction and a new way of being. Sam did many, many things to move his company in the right direction. To detail all of them would require a book, which I hope he will write some day, and a lot more information than I have available to me. I did not know this man as well as some of my colleagues did but I know, for certain, that he is a man with integrity. If he says it, you can take it to the bank.
By the time I came on board the company was doing very well. A brand new culture had been built. That s right built. Culture is something you build with every word you say and every action you take. A positive culture does not come about by accident. It takes a lot of soul searching and checking with people and just when you think you have it all figured out you have to check again. It takes the ability and the willingness to know and admit that you don t know everything and you don t have all the answers. It takes a desire to get input and feedback from the people affected by a given situation. It takes the guts to take action to fix something that s not working. It takes coaching and loyalty and lending a hand to those who need it. It takes understanding that people don t make mistakes because they want to. It takes a firm, but kind, word to someone who messes up. It takes the ability to foster a feeling of belonging among those who are in your business family. Sam certainly did all of these things and he worked tirelessly to ensure his executive and management teams did also.
Store Managers were invited, and expected, to have an impact on the whole organization and not just their own store. It did not stop there if the Store Manager was not satisfied with the outcome. She was never expected to settle for an answer that did not satisfy her. It wasn t over just because someone said it was over.
And the company flourished. Following the news of the sale of the company, most field management stayed in place for some time. Unfortunately, as with all good things, the culture we had come to know and love ended. It was like a period of mourning. Executive and management moved on to new challenges and the business went straight down, at least for the short term.
The new owners will never understand what happened. There will be reasons and excuses but they all amount to nothing. The truth, that they probably do not even realize, is that the great culture was run out of town; obviously deemed unnecessary and not worth saving. It s that simple and it s such a shame.
Those of us who lived in Sam s environment clearly understand what happened when he and his carefully chosen team were no longer at the helm.
The key to sustaining a successful business is to RESPECT the culture after all, the business is secretly thriving on it; OBSERVE carefully, for a time, and then ACT appropriately.

How I Used Aromatherapy and Feng Shui in my Home Office

Is your home office nothing more than a cramped corner of a guest bedroom or kitchen? I used to live in an old arts and crafts style ranch, circa 1928. What the rooms lacked in space, they did make up for in charm (as anyone who loves old homes can attest to). There was one corner of my very small guest room that became my first home office. It consisted of my laptop on a small, antique desk with the printer next to it on the floor. I used a beautiful, antique bench for my desk chair.

In the beginning, the functionality of the room wasn t a concern, but as my business grew, I realized I needed to make some changes to maximize the efficiency of my workspace. The space also had to have the right feel if I was going to spend long hours there.

I am a true believer in alternative therapies such as aromatherapy, therapeutic touch, feng shui, and all things organic. I decided to use some of these simple, yet effective means to maximize the efficiency of my home office.

My antique desk and bench were causing me to have back and wrist pain, which took me way too long to figure out. As a long-time fitness addict, I didn t realize that my toned muscles would get sore in front of a computer, but they did indeed. Reluctantly, .I replaced the antique desk and bench with a small, but ergonomically friendly desk and chair. That alone was a huge help! (Plus the antiques were happy to be back in their original locations, where they could resume their original jobs as eye-catching room d cor.)

My feng shui and hippy friends advised me how to rearrange the workspace to give it the feel I needed to keep me coming back to a workspace I loved. Whenever I worked, I lit my favorite aromatherapy candle. My senses were sharpened, and I felt serene while performing my business tasks.

I was told to rearrange the room so my desk faced the door. This was to increase my feeling of security. If you can t arrange your room in this fashion, you can place a mirror next to your computer or on the wall near it to have the ability to see the doorway. This will produce the same result.

Water symbolizes abundance and creativity. I placed a beautiful ocean picture from a recent trip to Aruba in front of my computer. That was easy enough, and it made a nice focal point for those staring off into space moments. No more blank walls for me!

The hardest part for me was de-cluttering the area (I m not really into cleaning.) My friends said all those papers and junk laying around the already cramped area only served to heighten my anxiety and impede my work efficiency. I had to learn to throw things and put papers in the recycling bin. They said it was really important, so I did it. I now find if I take five minutes at the end of a work session to clean up, the maintenance is really manageable, even for me.

Lastly, I added small green plants on the windowsill and next to my screen. Plants bring an immediate calming effect. They also added some life to what might have been an otherwise sterile work area.

I can honestly say I loved my fist home office. You can apply these principles to your office or work cubicle to get the same results. Have fun and good luck!

1) FRAGILE.

When your group moves into this phase, you will know it and sense it as well. Your leaders will start to experience success as well as you and it is consistent, and you will see some leaders start to create their own identity in this business.
And you will sense some beginnings of momentum as well.
You will start to see some growth in your group that you had absolutely nothing to do with, and it will continue.
And you will see some new faces starting to show up in your group that you don t know who they are, or their names.
THAT is when you will FEEL your group starting to Solidify, and that is where the majority of people quit.
80-90% of people who leave this business leave during the first 2 stages, and most leave during the first.
3) MATURE.
This phase is where the big money starts showing up. You can make a living in the solidifying phase, a nice one, but this phase is where the big checks start showing up, and show up they do. Not only for you, but also your leaders as well.
This phase is where you start to have Layered Leadership and that simply means you have Leaders in layers in your downline in many legs, and they now start to have Leaders showing up in their group as well. And the numbers in your group now number in the thousands, and many are active Leaders.
The Mature Phase also shows that your leaders have taught and duplicated how to build leaders in their group, and the dynamics of your group here become exciting as Mature Pockets start showing up and they no longer need you, as they have splintered into their own leadership organization.
This phase, $100,000 a year is commonplace.
And Millionaires to be start showing up.
4) ROCK SOLID.
This is the WEALTH CREATION Phase. This phase is where Wealth is created and accumulated and Millionaires roll up in this business.
This phase is where no matter what you do, you cannot mess up your business, and it will continue on in the event of your death.
The Rock Solid Phase is where also you have many Mature Pockets of distributors in your group, and now you have Mature Leaders that have big groups and many layers of Leadership.
Many people get close to this phase but never achieve it as they lack the Leadership skills to take it to this level and many are close to it, but yet don t understand it is that last 10% effort that most never give that determine the Rock Solid phase.
So those are the 4 phases of Organizational Growth in MLM.
Fragile, Solidifying, Mature, and Rock Solid.

Family Support and Interaction While Working at Home

Working at home sometimes cuts you off from the world outside and it may become lonely after time. Adult interaction is limited especially if working on line and phone conversations are minimal. People who work at home should make a special effort to go out and socialize with friends and family. This will keep them from feeling lonely and isolated while working at home. More work performed over the phone may also help with this. Meeting new people, even if it is over the phone, can keep things interesting and exciting.
The family may not view a work at home business and a legitimate business because the person gets to stay home. Especially in the beginning when the profits are not rolling in and a lot of time is spent learning and reading. More time may be spent away from the family when in the learning stage and the family may not take a liking to that. How can this be resolved to keep family peace?
A simple conversation about what is needed to start a work at home business and the time involved may be all it takes to make a family understand why so much time is spent on a business. Some may need more convincing and may also need to feel involved. This may help the family, especially children, not feel left out or abandoned.
If the children are old enough they can help out with small tasks such as, filing paper work, organizing office supplies, proof reading articles, clicking traffic exchanges if those are being used as an advertising tactic, coming up with ideas for advertising and articles and passing out or posting flyers around town. They could even make the flyers if their art skills are good enough.
Sometimes just being in the office with you would be enough for children, especially the smaller ones. Set up an area for them with their own table or desk and give them some supplies to color or draw with or small toys to play with to keep them busy and occupied. This may make them feel closer to you and allow them to interact with you so they don t miss out on time being spent with you.
Spouses can get involved also. They can proof read or type out articles if they are prewritten. Advertise you and your business at their work place by word of mouth, posting flyers, emailing friends and coworkers and handing out business cards. If they would rather not get involved with the business but want to spend time with you, maybe they can help out more around the house so the chores are done and you ll have more free time to spend with them after your work is complete.
It can sometimes be difficult to balance work and family but it is not impossible. Find the right schedule for you and your family and run with it. Be sure to make an effort to spend time with the family though, as they can get left behind in the shuffle of making your work at home business a success.

A company that offers services on credit card debt settlement will work out an amiable plan of action for you to pay up your credit card debt and eventually free yourself from any such liabilities.
The benefit of going to an agency that offers credit card debt settlement is that not only will someone else do the work of negotiating your credit card debt settlement for you, but that the people who will be representing you will more likely be able to work out a more optimum deal with you. Alone, you might be able to bring down the amount of debt you would go into settlement for to 70% of the total amount. 9-11 And Your Checking Account

Imagine a catastrophic event triggering the government to change the rules covering your checking account. Actually, you don t have to imagine it because it happened in New York on 9-11.
The ensuing halt to commerce in the immediate days after 9-11 (about four total) was enough of a catalyst for our otherwise sloth emulating elected Congressional representatives to pass an act that would ensure the transfer of checks between financial agencies would not again be disrupted by catastrophe, act of God, or dumb luck.
The act is called The Check 21 Act and went into effect on October 28, 2004. It created a new negotiable instrument called the substitute check so that once a customer s check is deposited, the funds will be available in a matter of hours. This is obviously a plus for the party to whom written.
Float time, the once magical free ride, has virtually disappeared. Not in every instance but you can bet your bottom line, in most. This is a minus unless your bank isn t using the substitute check negotiable instrument.
Asking your banker is your only way to know for sure. Of course, if you have been reading your statements, the answer may be right in front of you. But, it may not. So, repeating myself, ask your banker.
If your bank is using the substitute check, it is electronically transferring funds instantly between the account on which the check is drawn and the account into which it is deposited. Some would say that is nothing more than a simple bank transaction.
I would agree but the kicker is the original paper check never changes hands. If you see an inherent problem, welcome to the club. However, this article isn t about problems, inherent or otherwise, with electronic facsimile substitute checks, it is about you knowing about the new procedure put in place by the government to insure commerce continues even under the most dire of events.

How I Became A Notary Public

I m a stay at home mom and I have an in-home notary business. Well, actually it is a little more than just "notary" work, as I also walk borrowers through the process of signing their loan documents. I began by searching the net for any and everything I could find regarding notary publics and loan documents. It took months of research before I would even allow myself to start looking for clients and then a few more months to get up enough nerve to make those "cold contact" calls. But with each call, things became a little easier. I ll have to admit that sometimes I wish I took the easy way out and begged my friend for all the information, but I saw too many friendships end because of petty rivalry once business picked up, so I decided to start from scratch and learn everything I could. And boy am I glad that I did. Because all that research paid off in more ways that I can count. As I learned, I grew more knowledgeable and more confident in my abilities, which has allowed me to expand beyond my own limitations.
At first I was excited about this new venture, but when I learned that there were well over 72,000 notaries in the state of California alone I began to get really worried. I thought I had better jump on this wagon fast, before there were no more jobs left for me. I was on the computer every moment of every day. I wasn t quite sure what I was looking for, but I knew it was out there somewhere. Eventually I began to hit pay day and all my efforts began to pay off. But I still felt pressure as I waited for clients to call for my services. Then one day, I got a taste of what it would be like to be gone all day and all night. I didn t get to see my babies (5 and 9) and by the time I got home, even my husband was in bed. That s when I realized that as much as I wanted this business to take off ground floor, I wanted to be a stay at home mommy more.
So, I sat down and re-evaluated what I wanted out of life. I realized that I wanted to be readily available for my kids and husband, but I also wanted a career I could call my own. So, I decided to continue to pursue this business, but do so on my own terms. I would only accept jobs that worked around my family life and I would not take more than two jobs in one day. And to this day, I am glad that I made that choice.
California still has 72,000 notaries, but what I learned is that not all notaries are in my line of work. In fact, there are only about a third that do my line of work. And of that third, I can still choose how much money I make in any given month by how many hours I am willing to put into it. And best of all, succeeding in this business adventure has allowed me the strength and courage to try other avenues, such as writing a book entitled, "Tid-Bits for New Signing Agents". How To Control Ants In Your Home

For many people, summer means preparing for an invasion. Armies of troops come in lines barreling for their houses, ready to attack. No, these people aren t oppressed people in third world countries; they re regular people like you facing the smallest of invaders: ants. Ants are great creatures to have outdoors. They are good for the environment and help break down old, smelly rotting stuff so you don t worry about it, but inside, it s a different story. Inside they contaminate your food, and can harm you and your children. But don t fear, there are lots of simple ways to send these tiny invaders back outside and keep them there.

If you find a few ants in your house, you should actually take this as a good sign. This means that these are just scout ants and you can stop them before they can go back to the colony and start the full invasion. These ants go out and find food, leaving a scent trail as they go. They then follow the scent trail back to the colony and tell others to follow and come get food. The best way to stop this from happening is to destroy the scent trail. This way, these ants won t be able to make it back to the colony to tell others of their find. There are lots of products you can sprinkle on the trail to make it impossible to find. Some suggestions are black pepper, talcum powder, cinnamon, or vinegar (just put it in a spray bottle). Just sprinkle or spray one of these substances on the ants and their track. You can watch them for a minute before you apply while they walk so you know their previous path. Make sure to get the path they have come from.

While it is important to get them out of the house, it s just as important to keep the ants from coming back into the house. If you can find where they got into the house, apply whatever you re using (pepper, talcum, etc) on their entrances as well. This will keep other ants from following the trail into your house. When they panic and try to get away, watch where they go; you may be able to find where they got in the house. There are other products you can apply at the entrances to keep the ants from coming in again, including the crushed bay leaves and cayenne pepper. You can also sprinkle these products, or the ones mentioned earlier, in cabinets and near food. This will keep the ants away from the food. Another idea to keep them out is to draw a line along the inside barrier of the house where ants come in. Ants generally won t want to cross the line. These tactics will keep the ants from coming into the house or at least finding the food. If they don t think food is available, they will stop looking there.

Along with these tactics you should try to seal your food as well as you can. Ants can sometimes get them into closed jars, so keep those in the fridge if need be. If these tactics don t get rid of your ants, you can always buy ant poison. Just be sure to buy the right kind for the ants you have. If the correct taste isn t used, the ants won t eat it.

Interview Bias: Overcoming the Silent Forces Working Against You

Your job interview is tomorrow. You know your appearance will matter, so you polish your shoes and brush your hair. You realize your interviewer will have your resume in hand, so you ve come prepared to explain every minute detail included on it. You ve even done practice interviews and prepared your responses to all the trick questions. Are you ready? Not yet. There remains a single type of preparation that you should do that can make or break your interview-knowing how to handle the possible biases of an interviewer. You need this knowledge because of a simple reality; interviews are subjective, no matter how many objective indicators are introduced. Interviewers are human, and all carry with them some assumptions about different types of people. Despite what may be valid attempts to leave these assumptions behind in the process, even the most earnest interviewer may be letting some of these biases make their way into the decision-making process. The best candidate for a job has many a time been passed over in the interview process because of bias. You don t want to be one of them. You re not likely to be able to change the bias itself in the short duration of the interview, and you may not be able to recognize it with so much else going on. You can, however, increase the chances that the interviewer will not apply their biases or assumptions toward you. This means preparing for the possible biases of an interviewer before you encounter him/her. You therefore need to recognize the most likely biases people have toward you and prepare to address these biases in interviews to minimize their impact. Pinpointing Potential Biases Many people think biases surround visible differences that people have, like race, gender, or appearance. This is true. However, biases usually run much deeper and assumptions are made about a number of other potential differences you may have with your interviewer. An interviewer may unconsciously make assumptions about you based on the way that you speak, your age, or any of the background information you have listed on your resume. To figure out some of the biases that may surface, give some thought to comments people have made to you in the past that surprised you. Have people thought you were much younger or older than you actually are? Have they assumed you were less intelligent because of your accent? Have you been labeled because of the way you dress? Have people been surprised to learn something in particular about you? Make a list of some of these assumptions or obstacles that could impede on the interviewer from seeing you as the best candidate. Use your friends to add to your recollection. Ask them what their first impressions of you were. Colleagues from the past are especially valuable since they know you in a work atmosphere and work attire. Have friends read through your resume and create a list of five statements they would make about you based on your resume. Ask them to limit their responses to information on the resume and explain your goal in the exercise so you get honest answers. Combine these statements with ones people have made about you in the past and keep a list handy with all of these assumptions. The Information Inundation Technique Once you get a sense for the impression you make and the biases people may have against you, make sure you address them. You should still be focused on demonstrating why you are a qualified candidate for the job. Therefore, while delivering persuasive responses to interviewer questions, saturate your responses with information that will also undo biases. Here are some suggestions: 1. Match their speech and behaviors. It is a good idea in general to match your interviewers in terms of their speech and behaviors for etiquette purposes. If an interviewer is formal in their speech, you should be as well. If they sit up straight, don t slouch. This will help reduce assumptions they make about you based on differences they perceive they have from you. 2. Acknowledge & Spin It. If you sense a bias, don t be afraid to address what it is you think is being held against you. If you have an accent, explain what you do to make yourself understood. If you are young, note it, but also explain what your age adds and focus more on the experiences you have had that makes you worthy of the position. If you are a woman working in a male-dominated profession, explain what you can add to the position very specifically because you are female. Make a point to show the value of the aspect in question. 3. Find a connection. When you get the chance to ask your own questions at the end of the interview, work to establish a connection with your interviewer. Ask them what they like about the company in question, and communicate your ability to relate to some of the traits he or she identifies. Make a point of smiling and try to be friendly. An open, communicative style on your part is helpful to address any negative biases that person may unconsciously be holding against you. 4. Communicate your Bridge Building potential. A successful job candidate is not only someone who can do the job, but someone who can work in the organization s culture and be able to do the job well in the long run. Interviewers with biases may assume that you will not fit well into the organization s culture because of your differences. Communicate your ability to work with different people, think from different perspectives, and be open-minded. Give examples. Ask about the company culture and talk about your ability to work with and relate to different people. 5. Make it a strength. Have you had to deal with this someone who has been biased before because of something about the way you are? Use the experience to show your interviewer how you successfully overcame a difficulty. Emphasize the learning and growth you experienced as a result. This can help an interviewer recognize that their own unconscious bias is impacting their impressions. Make sure you don t insinuate in any way that your interviewer is biased. Your job in the interview is to demonstrate that you are a highly-skilled individual equipped to do the job for which you are applying. Critiquing your interviewer is not a step in the right direction. 6. Assume you are the best person for the position. Have you noticed that it is that much harder to sit up straight when you are feeling down in the dumps? Most people show their emotions in one way or another, and facing a biased interviewer is likely to stir some serious emotions of anger, frustration, devastation, or defeat. It is important to push through these feelings during the interview so that it doesn t impact your demeanor during the rest of the interview. You can decide later whether you want to work for the company the interviewer represents. 7. Make a Habit of it. Finally, get into the habit of building bias prep into your interview prep. Build these techniques into your responses and practice saying them so you are comfortable in the interview. Have a friend role-play the biased interview. Make it realistic. How will you face this practice situation? Interview bias exists, but it doesn t have to impact your potential to get hired. Use these techniques to improve your chances of getting hired based on your qualifications and motivation rather than being excluded because of interviewer bias. Why Profits And Not A Paycheck Create Wealth

The answer to this question lies in the passive income factor.
As an employee who receives a paycheck regularly, they ll only have the income that is generated from their work.
The ability of a person to create income that goes beyond his paycheck without him exerting too much work hours is the factor that separates an employee relying on his paycheck alone than an employee who relies on his paycheck but also has managed his regularly received paychecks well in order to create another source of income that doesn t rely much on his efforts of working on multiple jobs.
One key factor to consider is the ability of an employee to maximize his earning potential not by just relying on this regular paychecks received from his work but also on his ability to allot a part of his earnings in investing and generating passive income from them.
One person, an ordinary employee, say working as an applications developer in a globally known software company. He continuously gets the big projects and eventually rises up the corporate ladder in his company. As he gets promoted, so does his salary and the perks that go along with it. Eventually, as his income increases, so does his lifestyle. He just moved into a bigger apartment, continuously upgrades his PC notebook at home, buys new gadgets and other things that will raise his standard of living. The story ends though on how he gets the money that supports his standard of living. It s from his income earned from his work as an applications developer. This is also called earned income.
While any person can expect and wish for an increasing trend in his standard of living, his paycheck will usually remain constant for awhile unless he gets promoted or lands on a new job with a better pay compared to his previous one. To say that a person is now able to sustain his aimed standard of living, he should be able to divert some of his earned income from his paycheck to work for him. When a portion of his earned income is able to earn passive income, the cycle now goes on and on. Passive income can be defined as income that goes to you which is earned not thru your work within your 8 hour shift but
The question now is how to go beyond the regular paycheck and make some portions of the paycheck work to earn profits for yourself?
The key lies with knowing how to make the earned savings earn in the way of profits. Once a person is now making his money work to make more money, he s now in the process creating profits beyond what his paycheck could deliver. This is now what we call passive income. When a person is earning money thru his current savings and investment placements and these sources of income are now able to sustain his current lifestyle or even upgrade to higher standard of living, he is now technically creating wealth for himself.
There are various ways for anybody to make his money work for him. Common ways of doing this is investing in real estate that appreciates in value, running a business, or by creating investing various financial instruments such as shares of stocks, mutual funds and government or corporate bonds.
A person with more time can probably run a small business by capitalizing on his earned savings or by partially seeking the help of banks to fund his business by obtaining a loan. As his business gets more clients and expands, he will able to see the difference running a business provides to him than working for a regular paycheck. A business, even small in capitalization when run smoothly, will surely attract more business transactions and thus see itself to expanding. As compared to being dependent solely on a paycheck, running a business, once successful can provide financial independence and wealth creation in the long run.
A person with probably lesser time to monitor and run a business can probably opt first by buying assets that creates income for him. Buying a real-estate property that can be turned into a commercial center that will generate rental income for him is one way one can capitalize and build wealth on real-estate. Buying a real-estate property at an undervalued prize and seeing potentials on its value to appreciate in the long run is also a good way to capitalize on it. He can sell the real-estate property once it appreciates in value that the owner sees that it has reached its value potential.
The same is true with investment securities such as shares of stocks, government or corporate bonds, and mutual funds. The value of these assets once it appreciates provides a realizable income from the initial investment that the buyer shelled out when he bought them.
